SEE turtles – SEA turtles

Fun Fact: Did you know that there are 7 species of sea turtles around the world! and the most commonly seen in Sri Lanka are the Green Turtles.

Commonly mistaken by many, sea turtles cannot retract their legs and head back into their shell like other turtles, this makes them more prone to endangerment. Most species of sea turtles are now being classified as endangered species due to the inhumane acts of slaughtering for their skin, shells, meat and eggs. Another reason these innocent reptiles are endangered is due to humans disrupting their natural habitats and being caught to the fisherman’s nets at sea. It is our duty to work as one to safeguard them.

We at the Fortress Resort and Spa go the extra mile to save and protect the sea turtles, an endangered species of the world. The south-coastal areas are famously known to be the breeding grounds for around five to six turtle species, and we have seized this fact as a prime opportunity to form the “Relax and Release Turtle Conservation Project” whilst assisting the local turtle hatchery in Habaraduwa to safeguard and help the sea turtles coming to the southern coast of Sri Lanka. We also provide free internet access at the turtle hatchery site to all those who are inquisitive and interested in learning more about these beautiful, harmless reptiles and ways in which we can assist to safeguard them.

As an initiative of the project we shelter and take care of the turtle eggs in the sanctuary until they hatch and are ready to be released back into the ocean. The local community as well as our guests are encouraged to help make a change with us, one step at a time.
