Sea turtles are extraordinary creatures that have roamed our oceans for over 100 million years. Unfortunately, mostly due to human interferences such as poaching, beach development and fishing, the sea turtle population is drastically declining. Out of the seven species of sea turtles that exist today, three are classified as endangered and another three as critically endangered.
However, all hope is not lost. The Fortress Resort & Spa is one of many establishments around the world that strives to protect these amazing creatures from becoming extinct by operating its own turtle hatchery. Mirissa, Kosgoda and Tangalle are amongst the other south coast destinations where one can see similar conservation efforts to save some of the sea turtle species nesting on the island’s beaches; they range from the Green Turtle to the Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead and the giant Leatherback which is the largest sea turtle species in the world.
Through the resort’s Relax and Release Turtle Conservation Project, guests can also be a part of this incredible venture and save the lives of many innocent sea turtles. Not only will you be able to get up close to them but also get to release adorable baby turtles back into the ocean!
