The Koggala Beach
Known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Surrounded by miles of soft golden sand, the island possesses a rich culture and is regarded by most as the perfect holiday destination. Fascinated by the sun-drenched beaches and the warm sunny climate, tourists flock to the island to enjoy a well-deserved vacation throughout the year.
The relatively small Koggala beach is among the most beautiful beaches along the southern coast and is surrounded by stunning reefs teeming with exotic marine life. Swarming with brightly coloured fish, the reef readily shows off its diverse marine life and is paradise to any nature-enthusiast. The beach itself is immaculately quilted by soft sand and bordered by shady coconut trees, emanating an aura of peacefulness and tranquillity.
The beach is a nesting area for marine turtles who visit the island during the breeding season. Though an opportunity to actually see the egg-laying process is very rare, during the daytime adult turtles can be spotted swimming freely in the distant ocean, surfacing for air every once in a while.
Visitors to Koggala may also witness the ancient practice of stilt fishing on the coastlines by local fishermen. These fishermen are men who have chosen to continue the traditions passed on by their forefathers rather than adopting modern fishing methods. Perched upon stilts under the scorching sun for hours, stilt fishermen use fishing rods or lines to catch fish - usually spotted herring or small mackerel. Although using a fishing net is more practical, it is not used since the fishermen do not want to scare away fish that might not return for a very long time. Therefore the unobtrusive, yet gruelling, method of stilt fishing is practised.
Koggala is ideal for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle usually associated with a few of the larger beaches in the country. The calm atmosphere and the breath-taking splendour of the beach have never failed to captivate the hearts of its visitors by bestowing a sense of serenity and relaxation upon them. Quietly enchanting, the Koggala beach is the perfect epitome of the phrase 'small is beautiful.'
